The Biggest Misconception About Sound Healing

One of the most common misconceptions about sound healing is that you need to be in a perfectly quiet space to practice. But that’s not true at all! In fact, sound healing is about embracing all the sounds around us — even the ones we might consider “disruptive.” Let me share an example to show you how sound meditation can work even in the noisiest of environments.

This summer, I had the privilege of leading two sound meditations during a wellness event at the beautiful W Hoboken. The catch? The event was held outdoors, and I had to compete with:

  • Helicopters flying overhead

  • Traffic sounds buzzing around

  • People talking and laughing nearby

  • And, of course, all the usual city chaos

Despite all these distractions, my crystal singing bowls and I were still able to guide my students into a deeply meditative state. They managed to find their center, tap into deep relaxation, and connect with the healing power of sound — all amidst the noise!

So, What’s the Deal with Silence?

Sound healing isn’t about escaping noise or finding that “perfect” silence. It’s about using all the sounds — even the seemingly distracting ones — as tools for deeper meditation. The key is embracing every sound that comes your way, whether it’s a helicopter, honking horn, or your neighbor’s conversation.

Instead of letting those noises disturb your practice, they can actually help you expand your awareness. Each sound becomes an invitation to stay present and connected with the moment.

The Power of Embracing All Sounds in Your Practice

When we stop trying to shut out the noise — whether it’s external sounds or the internal chatter in our minds — we open ourselves to true healing. Sound meditation teaches us to stay grounded, even in the midst of chaos, by using the sounds of life as a tool for focus and mindfulness.

The next time you hear something you would normally consider a distraction (an ambulance siren, construction noise, or even your upstairs neighbor’s boom box), take a deep breath. Instead of getting frustrated, invite the sound into your experience. Use it as an opportunity to stay connected with your breath and practice mindfulness.

Sound healing is about learning to embrace the present moment — no matter what it sounds like.
